The Power of Presence in the Emergency Room
What is rightness?
In the context of this clip, RIGHTNESS is the owning of your power to wield “reality” through consciousness. I also speak to safety here, and right timing. It hasn’t always been popular to stand for the power of nature to heal. I posted this story recently. It’s a story of right timing, the meeting of resistance with humor and curiosity, and RIGHTNESS for the power of our osteopathic legacy to serve in this time of radical change and uncertainty.
Story: The Power of Presence in the Emergency Room
“I have what I would call a “knock your socks off” story for you on the power of presence. It happened in an emergency room 20 years ago. Background: I’m an osteopathic physician, which means I received regular medical training alongside osteopathic training. I’m a scientist and a healer. During my family practice residency training, a woman came into the ER with a horrendous headache after hitting her head on concrete. Her head scan was normal. We gave her several pain medications. None of them helped. The same doctors that had been teasing me for weeks about my love of natural medicine were flustered. They couldn’t discharge her, and they had no next step. This felt like a “divine setup.” I found myself speaking the words, “I’m happy to try to help her,” as my mind said, “don’t be silly, you can’t do healing work in a busy ER, and you really don’t know what you’re doing anyway.”
This was one of my earliest experiences of my gut overriding logic. I had just qualified for my medical license, and I barely had any experience. But I did have one piece . . . I had learned how to become exquisitely present after a few years of practice with osteopathic physician mentors. When I went to see her, lights, beeping sounds, and frenzied people were everywhere. This was NOT a setup for healing. I stayed my course. I sat down and held her head, and waited. I literally did NOTHING other than become present. And I mean REALLY present. Maybe ten minutes later, the feeling of her body, my body, and the room felt like they “came into focus,” as if all the notes in a cacophony of sounds suddenly harmonized. At that moment, she literally hopped off the table, said, “I’m good,” and skipped out of the room.
The MD that had teased me most for my “woo woo,” was mystified and intrigued. He asked me how it had happened. He then admitted proudly that his grandfather was D.O. I said in humor, “I guess you’re ok then!” The tables had turned. He was excited to help me design a study to try to measure what happened. Ultimately what we saw was that through very precise measurements of oxygen delivery to the tissues, my “treatments” were affecting variability in the heart rate, which correlates with the state of the nervous system. This showed that presence could dramatically shift the body from fight-or-flight to a state that supports healing. There have been piles of studies proving the same since. What I do now is teach people exquisite presence.
We remember how to be present in every moment so that we keep our bodies saturated with life force circulation. If we sit, walk, think, and breathe in ways that support the fluid nature of the body, our ability to self-correct is so extraordinary we rarely need doctors at all. The practices for “being your own doctor” are simple, easy, enjoyable, and fun. We can do them while we’re driving, walking, sitting at our desks . . . with no added time to our day. In no time, your body can have less pain and more fitness, with more ability to think clearly, process emotions, and create. Watch here: https://youtu.be/qdApL4A34CE
