Healing is Love
Healing is Love
My teacher once told me that healing is love. One and the same. I sat with that for quite some time; I didn’t understand.
As a doctor with a good sense of the map of the body in my hands, I can do a lot to create balance for patients, and by way of my conditioning, I thought that this was my job. To “fix” people, to do the work of waking them up and setting them free. It seemed like a limitless ask. I was exhausted.
I’ve come to see that in both myself and others, there is a part of this opening of the body that only we have the privilege and joy of doing, of receiving, of gifting to ourselves.
When I started to understand the balance between giving and receiving, and the part of healing that thankfully must come from within, I became so excited to support others in remembering their extraordinary self-healing abilities. Simultaneously, I began to heal myself. I was no longer exhausted, I was on fire!
Only we can choose to open, receive, breathe and live from our hearts. It’s as plain as saying, “I can love you, but only you can give self-love.” We cannot out-source loving ourselves — thankfully!
So how is it that we get back to heart-centered living? Through the body. Through the willingness to feel, breathe fully, and engage dynamically with every cell, every spark of electrical current, and with the way that the heart feels deeply into all of it — within and without. Not simply when in nature, with loved ones, or in our practices, but all the time.
As we sit so much, today I will share how I use our time in chairs to drop into this kind of connectedness and flow. The basics of breathing and feeling fully while sitting is a rich foundational experience for integrating several specific pieces of supporting the heart and body to open and heal. We can do this, fairly effortlessly and quite enjoyably, often, if not always.
Below is a quick home-spun video I did of a few of the very simplest elements of this practice sourced from my roots in Osteopathy, Continuum Movement, Yoga, Qi Gong and even Tango dancing. An embodied integration of all of these approaches applied to the very elegant and enlivened experience of sitting in fluid consciousness, as though the body is more verb than noun.
I’ve also included a blog I wrote on what I am now calling, “natural sitting.” This way of being is innate, which means you already know how to do it. Now to simply remember.
My Story
I’ve been running a busy medical practice as a single mom for many years. It’s often been challenging to set time aside for nourishing practices, and while I have managed to do this to some extent, ultimately LIVING in a constant state of fluid practice has proven a pleasurable and beautifully sustainable path to healing for me and many of my patients.
I’m talking about living in a way that is nourishing in real-time, through on-going connection with our bodies, with others, with the planet, and with the fluid, dynamic interconnectedness of all of it.
Imagine for a moment that life and everything in it is simply motion, change, matter in a constant, dynamic state of flux. Consider also the heart as the sun of the solar system of all of it. I’ve come to see that this is so, quite literally. In my 20 years of working with bodies, I’ve seen that both physical and energetic patterns, no matter what they “seem,” ultimately stem from and lead back to the heart. The heart and love as both the origin and destination of healing, and of all that is.
Osteopathy as I practice it is a way of being. It’s a process, a returning to heart-centered living. It’s a deep honor for me to share with you what I’ve received in this regard from my teachers, my inner guidance, and nature herself.
